Exosomes are small, membrane-bound vesicles, usually 30-150 nanometers in diameter, secreted outside of cells. They play an important role in intercellular communication and carry a variety of biomolecules, such as proteins, lipids, mRNA, and microRNA. Exosomes allow a cell to transfer its contents to another cell and may be effective in many biological processes, from immune responses to cancer spread.
